Michigan Family Fights to Save Pet Dog from Impending Death

Lefty

We are only 2 months into 2015 and already another dog is facing death based on trumped charges of aggression. As if the murder of beloved family pets hasn’t already reached an all-time high over the past few years.

The victim in this case is a 9 year old dog named Lefty, the villain the Lapeer County 71A District Court in Michigan.

Lefty, has been a beloved family pet for 7 years. His owners adore him as do their five children and eight grandchildren.

So how does a great companion animal like Lefty end up on death row with an execution date of February 19th, 2015? Not through anything he has done, not by anything his owners have done but through the negligence of their neighbors.

These neighbors who did not care enough about their own pets to keep them licensed and contained on their own property allowed them to roam into Lefty’s yard and space and attack him on 5 separate occasions. These attacks spanned over a period of 3 years, 2011-2014. Of course Lefty, upon being attacked, like any dog or human would, defended himself.

Unfortunately, during two of those incidents the neighbor’s dogs died. Not as a result of injuries inflicted by Lefty, but because the neighbor did not seek immediate medical care for their pets. So we have a thoughtless neighbor who doesn’t care enough about their own dogs, yet wants Lefty and his family to pay the price for their negligence.

How is this fair?? It isn’t.

Today, Lefty sits in a cage in isolation in the Lapeer County Animal Control. He is 9 years old and wondering what he did or why his family left him there. His heart breaks daily and he just wants to go home. But he won’t go home ever again if the court has their way. Lefty will die on February 19th 2015.

Meanwhile, Lefty’s owner is working with their attorney to get an appeal for Lefty.

Lefty, like many of his predecessors is going to pay the ultimate price for the shortcomings of his neighbors and a lopsided judicial system that punishes the victim while the criminals walk free.

He, like his predecessors is a voiceless victim who cannot verbally defend himself in court and tell his side of the story which is why we have to be his voice! Sign and share the petition and grant Lefty the opportunity to go home with his family where he belongs and put this whole miscarriage of justice to rest. It is the only right and fair thing to do.
